J.,S/Lt., 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. S/Lt. Blessé à la jambe droite et au bras droit, il entre à l'hôpital militaire de Rennes le 27 juillet 1944.ll s'évade le 5 août 1944 à Saint-Martin-de-la-Place.
"Dans la nuit du 2 Août les prisonniers dans le camp se sont rendus à l'extérieur de Rennes et nous sommes montés dans un train de 17 wagons. Je suis resté dans ce wagon jusqu'au 5 août. Pendant cette période, le train a eu beaucoup de la peine à progresser... Le 5 Août nous avons cassé la serrure de la porte et 10 de mes camarades du wagon ont sauté sur la voie.
"J'ai sauté sur le côté droit dans l'herbe, sans me blesser. J'étais seul. C'était près de Saint-Martin-de-la-Place, avant Saumur. J'ai grimpé dans un arbre où j'ai passé la nuit. Le lendemain matin, j'ai pris contact avec un agriculteur pour avoir de la nourriture. Il voulait que je reste avec lui, mais je lui ai dit que sa maison était trop près de la route. J'ai marché vers le nord et mes suis arrêté à la cinquième ferme rencontrée sur mon chemin. J'ai été accueilli par M. Eugène Allard jusqu'au 13 Août. J'ai travaillé au début à la ferme mais je me suis ensuite caché dans la grange pour échapper aux soupçons des voisins. Le 13 août un FFI est venu me chercher pour m'emmener à Longué-Jumelles ... Le lendemain, les FFI m'ont conduit en voiture à Angers, où j'ai rencontré la 5ème division d'infanterie".

"On the night of 2 August the prisoners in the stalag were evacuated on foot to a RR S of Rennes, where we were put into a train of 17 boxcars. The train started off E, and I remained on it until the night of 5 August. During that period the train had a great deal of the trouble. The maquis attacked, and once they took off with the engine. Then there were many sections of the track that were torn up, which had to be repaired before we could proceed. On 5 August we broke the lock on the door and 10 from my car jumped out singly. From there on I was alone.
I jumped out on the right side into some grass, receiving no injury. It was near St. Martin de la Place, outside Saumur. I climbed into a tree and spent the night there. The next morning I contacted a farmer for food. He wanted me to stay with him, but I told him that his house was too near the road. I walked on N and stopped at 5 different farms. I stayed at the last one (M. Eugene ALLARD, St. Martin de la Place, Maine et Loire) until 13 August first working on the farm and then hiding in the barn to avoid suspicion form the neighbors. On 13 August, the FFI came and took me to Longue…the next day, the FFI took me by car to Angers where I met the 5th Inf Div. "
